Geography of Samara Region

Samara region is located in the southeastern part of the European territory of Russia in the basin of the Volga, the largest river in Europe. The region has the area of 53,6 thousand sq.km (0,31 % of the total territory of Russia ). In the north it borders on the Republic of Tatarstan, in the south - on Saratov area, in the east - on Orenburg area, in northwest - on Ulyanovsk area. The area stretches from north to south for 335 km and from west to east for 315 km. Samara region is forest-steppe region. In the north it is covered with coniferous and broadleaved woods, and its south and east are mainly steppe areas. The largest mountain range of the area and one of the most beautiful places in Russia are Mountains Zhigulevskie. The main river of the region except Volga, the most significant rivers are Samara, Sok, Kinel', Big Irgiz, Kondurcha.

History of Samara

Samara was officially founded in 1586 when on the bank of the Volga River the construction of the fortress that was to protect the Russian State from the incursion of martial nomadic tribes was started. But in fact, the settlement on the bent of the Volga River had been mentioned in the ancient chronicles since 14th century. During World War II Samara (the city situated not far from Moscow ), then named Kuibyshev, was the second capital of USSR. The city's growth was stimulated during World War II by its distance from the war zone and the evacuation there of numerous government functions when Moscow was threatened by German attack; also helped the postwar development of the Volga-Urals oilfield. The city reverted to its old name in 1991.

Many famous people worked and lived in Samara. Outstanding Russian writers Lev Tolstoy and Maxim Gorky, painters Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov and Ivan Aivazovsky, revolutionists Michael Frunze and Vladimir Lenin are among them. Even a French writer Alexander Duma had paid a visit to Samara in 1858. Impressed by the travel he wrote the book "From Paris to Astrakhan " where he gave his description of Samara.

Climate

Samara area has sharply continental climate, average temperature of January -13,9°C, average temperature of July +20,1°C. Waterless Asian semi deserts affects the climate of the southern regions of Samara area and cause periodic droughts.

Samara nowadays

… Years passed and Samara grew into a large industrial and cultural center. The main branches of industry here are mechanical engineering, oil production, power engineering and chemical. Local plants design and assemble modern aircrafts and space-cistern equipment. The city look has changed lately. Today Samara citizens enjoy many parks. The embankment on the Volga-river is a favorite strolling area. Inimitable in their beauty are city streets due to the architectural variety of styles. One can see Empire, modernist, Old-Russian, constructivist-style house buildings, a great number of eclectic buildings-examples of the so-called merchant architecture. Whole districts of old houses with corner turrets and steeples, decorates with wooden fretwork, are preserved in this city. One must admire the German church and the Gothic arches of the only Polish Roman Catholic church in the Volga area. The Orthodox church and cathedral domes sparkle in the blue sky. The cultural assets of the city include Philharmonic Society, opera and ballet, drama and children's theatres and many libraries, institutes and universities. Samara museums possess rich collections of unique art works. Picturesque Samara with its clear Volga water and sandy beaches attract people from different parts of the area. Many river-boats form three and four-decker cruise ships to hydrofoils ply the water ways. Many tourists came daily to the city by river boats. Samara is a transportation hub with a large railway junction and international airport.

How to get

… by air
The Samara regional airport is located halfway between the city of Samara and Togliatti. It is approximately a one-hour drive from the airport to the center of either city. The passenger terminal building has the capacity for 400 passengers per hour and 120 flights per day. The airport also incorporates a cargo shed and an aircraft maintenance hangar. The airport has an international customs department, which expeditiously handles incoming international flights.

Samara is the headquarter of the Kuibyshevskaya Railway - one of the largest in the whole of Russia, crossing 10 regions and connecting the western and central parts of the country with the Urals, Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Central Asia and those areas' supplies of finished products and raw materials.

The Samara City Government has launched a project to construct a new terminal with hotel, business center and other facilities, conforming to international standards. Part of this terminal is already constructed and being successfully utilized. 

Regularly scheduled trains travel between Samara and almost all cities in Russia. The train system in Samara is convenient and accessible year-round. Express trains numbered 1-100 are reliable and usually on time, presenting a low-cost way to travel. The luxury rooms on the trains vary greatly, but often they are “acceptable.” An express train to and from Moscow runs every day and the journey is 18 hours each way. There are also transit trains that go to Moscow .

Some tickets are not available in advance and can be bought only on the day of departure. The ticket offices at the station are open 24 hours a day, but tickets cannot be bought by phone from there. Home delivery is available if a ticket is ordered at least 2 days prior to departure.

…by road
Several major inter-connecting regional roads cross the Samara Region, providing good access to many other parts of the Russian Federation. Transport companies operate both domestic and international haulage services. The standard speed for transportation of containers by road is 400 km per day. Average time of delivery from Samara to Moscow is 2 days; to St. Petersburg - 3 days; to Odessa (Black Sea) – 3; and to Western Europe- 10 to 15 days.

…by sea
Samara Region is situated on the Volga river, the largest waterway in Russia linking northern and southern ports, to the White, Barents and Kara Seas in the north; the Caspian Sea, Sea of Azov, Black and Mediterranean Seas in the south; and the Baltic and North Seas in the west. Samara City and Togliatti both have ports with good handling facilities and road connections. The main cargo is oil and oil-based products, and the ports can accommodate cargo ships with a load capacity of up to 5,000 tons. Passenger ships are available to and from Moscow, St. Petersburg and all large ports along the Volga River. Travel to Moscow takes about 7 days.
